On The Road

ON THE ROADY: Toscane

We picked up Roady in early July for a 2 week adventure. The employees of Vanomobil Deerlijk provided an extensive explanation of how Roady works, but everything is actually self-explanatory. Then we drove back home, got everything neatly packed in the suitcase and ready to leave. We had not planned much in advance for this trip, only that we wanted to return to beautiful Tuscany.

So we left for Italy via Germany. The first day we drove all the way to Bayern. There we found camping 'Ottobeuren' by chance. After a walk to the nice village of the same name for our dinner, it was time for a first night in the roof tent. The Roady is handy, you click the tent loose and you're ready for a comfortable night with a beautiful view from on top of the roof. In the morning you have everything cleaned up in half an hour and you are ready for the road!

The next day we crossed the Alps and drove to Modena. There we found a camper place on the edge of the city, a perfect base for taking a walk in the evening and having something to eat. We decided to first drive as far south as possible and then return at our leisure. So that day we drove to Lago Bolsena, where we found a top campsite on the lake, namely camping Pineta. In the evening we ate barbecue on our gas fire and played board games under the awning.

Then we drove to the Amalfi Coast, the southernmost point of this trip. We stayed for three days at a beautiful campsite close to the coast. From there we visited Positano, a beautiful typical town on a slope on the coast and took a ferry to Capri.

We spent five days in Tuscany. Val D'Orcia was definitely the highlight of the trip! With Roady we drove through the hills and cypressa. We made some wonderful stops along the way to have an aperitif under the awning. Some recommendations: Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino, all super nice towns! Another highlight was the final of the World Cup (Italy - Belgium) on the big screen in Siena on July 11, including a huge party afterwards in the Piazza del Campo, a great experience! And after the party: luckily it's very easy to set up the tent (because we were a bit tipsy ;) ) and go straight to sleep.

On the return journey we made a two-day stopover in the Dolomites. We walked through the Alpe di Siusi (beautiful meadows in the mountains) and along Lago di Carrezza (beautiful lake). It drizzled regularly in the mountains, but under Roady's awning there was plenty of room to take shelter and have a BBQ.

We stopped again in Munich, for a delicious typical German sausage with sauerkraut and a liter of beer, and drove back into our Belgian country the next day.
